SOUNDERS FC: Midfielder Stephen King traded to DC United for pick



Sounders FC midfielder Stephen King was traded to DC United Thursday afternoon, in exchange for United’s second-round 2011 Superdraft pick. The 24-year-old midfielder struggled to find a role in the Sounders’ lineup through the MLS season, but made a dramatic impact with the squad last summer during the US Open Cup.

Most notably, King scored the winning goal against the Houston Dynamo in the Open Cup semi-final match in Tukwila last July. That 2-1 win sent the Sounders to our nation’s capital to face DC United and eventually earn the team’s first trophy in franchise history.

Sounders FC acquired King from the 2009 expansion draft from the Chicago Fire at the start of the season. Given the success of Osvaldo Alonso and Peter Vagenas at the midfield, King found it troubling to contribute here in Seattle on a regular basis.
