MARINERS: Griffey strokes walk-off grand slam vs. Reds

The Kid still has it. Despite off-season surgery, a thoroughly disappointing spring-training average of .179 and an aging body that seemed to be finally catching up with him, Ken Griffey showed why he deserves a spot on the Mariners roster.

Trailing 5-2 to the Cincinnati Reds in the ninth inning with one out and a full count, Junior launched a grand slam off Reds pitcher Kip Wells to propel the M’s to victory over Griffey’s other team. The win gives the Mariners a Cactus League record of 9-14-1 with only nine days until the regular season begins.

Griffey said earlier this spring that he has been pacing himself and won’t really put on the gas until the last ten days of camp, a statement backed up by today’s game-winning swat.

Seattle pitcher Ian Snell will start for the Mariners in their Saturday against the Dodgers. First pitch goes out at 1:05 p.m.
