To make room on the Major League 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Ian Snell has been designated for assignment. Seattle now has 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Snell.

Sweeney will wear #37 and is available for tonight's 7:15 p.m. CT/5:15 p.m. PT game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. With these roster moves, the Mariners 40-man roster is now at 38 players.

Snell, 28, is 0-5 with a 6.41 ERA (33 ER, 46.1 IP) in 12 appearances with the Mariners this season. He went 0-5, 6.11 (24 ER, 35.1 IP) in 8 starts, walking 21 and striking out 17. He allowed 3 hits and 4 runs in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen in his last outing Monday night at St. Louis. In seven Major League seasons, Snell compiled a 38-53 record with a 4.80 ERA (429 ER, 803.2 IP). He was acquired by Seattle on July 29, 2009 (along with INF Jack Wilson) as part of a seven-player trade-deadline deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
