SEAHAWKS: OPINION: No more Bittersweet Symphony

Time to change

What can you say about the Seahawks' history? Super Bowl champion banners don't sway in the breeze atop Qwest Field's rafters. The Seahawks regrettably make the list on NFL Network's top 10 busts of all time - twice. "Kinda close, but not quite," sums up the 30+ year history thus far.

The only thing that can change at this point is the future, and that's why I'm urging Seattle to begin this overhaul by changing its theme song to something a little more uplifting. I'm talking about the Verve ballad "Bittersweet Symphony.

To Continue...

If you've never been to a Seahawks game, let me set up the scene for you. The team brings out a giant Seahawk-logo shaped doorway to the stadium where the players enter the field through, minutes before the game starts. As the players rush out, fireworks blast, echoing through the confines of the stadium as "Bittersweet Symphony" plays in the background. Think WWE.

The song itself is great, with its orchestral background and lyrics that undercut the musical mood of the 90s. It's just not a very good football song.

Phrases like, "Try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die," don't necessarily inspire greatness out of people (well, except for maybe Josh Brown who termed himself a slave to the businessman.)

It's kind of like playing "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton at a wedding. Don't do death during a marriage and don't get all philosophical at football games.

So I think it's time to change this tune. Coincidentally, I've also got a few suggestions.

Nirvana - Any song
Just kidding. It's the obvious choice, and a little too obvious. I know it was the first band that came to your mind. Good job, way to be original.

Pearl Jam - Any song
See above. We'll just skip the rest of the grunge bands associated with Seattle.

Akon - Smack Dat
Would anyone see this coming? It would make so little sense that somehow it would. It's also a family-friendly, timeless track that will be as relevant today as it will be 100 years from now, guaranteed.

Lady Gaga - Every song
Not just any song, every song. Honestly I wouldn't mind if they played Lady Gaga throughout the entire game. Hell, bring her there for live performances. Sign her up for the longest, most lucrative NFL contract in the history of the game and then clear out the rafters 'cus we are going to need room for Championship banners for however long her career lasts. With lyrics like "How'd I turn my shirt inside out," how can you not be inspired to WIN?

OK, Maybe I don't have any real suggestions and maybe I'm a little too scared of what people will say about my music selection.

So I'll leave it up to the readers to decide. What song would you choose for Seattle's entrance theme?
