SOUNDERS FC: Backup goalkeeper provides depth in first full season with Sounders FC

As the Seattle Sounders FC begin their regular season tonight on the Xbox Pitch, the squad welcomes in a familiar backup for Kasey Keller between the posts. GK Terry Boss is entering his first full season with the Sounders after signing with the squad midseason 2009.

Boss did not see any MLS action during their inaugural season, but appeared in both friendlies versus Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona last summer. He was waived by the New York Red Bulls last May while recovering from a torn PCL, but again did not waste much time in finding a niche here in the Pacific Northwest as a backup role player.

Naturally, fan-favorite Kasey Keller defends the net for Sounders FC, and that should be no different while contending for trophies in 2010. Therefore, Boss is not expected to put in a great amount of playing time this season. Given Keller’s age and experience, however, his tenure here in Seattle won’t last forever, as Boss provides a suitable successor for when Keller moves on.

Terry is measured at 6’3” / 205 pounds and resides from Philomath, Oregon just 5 miles west of Corvallis. Despite living minutes away from Oregon State University, Boss played four years of college ball at the University of Tulsa where he was named second team All-Missouri Valley Conference in 2004. Terry also comes from a good, athletic line of genetics as his older brother, Kevin, is the starting tight-end for the New York Giants.

Last summer, Boss replaced then backup Ben Dragavon for the roster position. Dragovan appeared in only one game last season against the Kansas City Wizards replacing Keller after earning his only red card of the season. He was a locally-acclaimed athlete hailing from Monroe, and also competing at Western Washington University.
