SEAHAWKS: Whitehurst to battle Hasselbeck for starting job

Will Whitehurst supplant Hasselbeck
this season?

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made it clear today that there would be competition at all positions - even at quarterback.

Charlie Whitehurst looks to be the heir apparent to QB Matt Hasselbeck, who has struggled the past two seasons behind shoddy line play and injuries.

"Charlie is coming in here to Battle," Carroll said. "In all phases of our program, in every aspect of it, we're trying to make it as competitive as possible."

Carroll said that the organization hopes they can develop Whitehurst into a long-term quarterback.

"We've gone about this looking for a quarterback that we thought could be in the program for a long time," Carroll said. "Charlie is fit, he's athletic. He's got a big future ahead of him. We're hoping he'll be with us for a long time."

Whitehurst signed a two-year deal worth up to $8 million.
