MARINERS: Spring Training Report #1

Spring Training is in full-force this week as all invitees have checked-in and the Mariners have commenced full-squad practices, beginning yesterday. There have been many good signs and positive vibes reporting from camp thus far, and it would appear the biggest (and only) setback has been battling the weather.

To Continue...
Outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and newly-acquired Milton Bradley reported to camp Monday for their physicals and, as expected, have both been declared fit to participate. Most notably, yesterday was the first time Bradley has spoken to the media as a Seattle Mariner.

“I want to be healthier than I have ever been and play games and win.” Milton continued, stating, “Primarily ... I want to have fun. In the past I just wanted to win. I didn’t care if I like it or not as long as I was winning because that is all it was about for me. At this point in my career I want to enjoy it, I want to have fun.”

The provided quotes should be music to Seattle’s ears; given the fact the biggest risk in trading for Milton Bradley is team morale. The All-Star outfielder has battled with previous staffs, burned bridges, and even forced his way out of towns as was the case of his previous stint with the Cubs. With a relaxed and positive outlook on the upcoming season M’s fans can exhale for the time being, knowing that Bradley’s priorities are not solely on himself anymore.

In other news, reporters were taken aback this morning when the Mariners took the field only to find second baseman Jose Lopez fielding drills from … third base. Second base was manned by free agent signee Chone Figgins. Minutes later, the team performed drills that didn’t need a third baseman, in which Lopez returned to his traditional position, along with Figgins, at second.

Figgins never officially committed to playing third base in the offseason, but that was to be expected to fill the vacancy of the departed Adrian Beltre. In the chance that Lopez were dealt in the offseason, only then would Figgins be a candidate for 2B. Lopez admitted this afternoon to MyNorthwest.com that he was open to the possibility of transitioning to third base if the opportunity is suited right.

Rounding out our first report, Cliff Lee is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session with the Mariners on Wednesday February 24th. Lee underwent minor surgery to remove a bone spur from his left foot earlier this month and was reported to miss 2-3 weeks. It appears that Cliff’s recovery has gone well, if not better than expected, and it is evident coaches and players (not to mention the fans) are excited to have him working in an M’s uniform.
